Monday, 20 December 2010, saw the re-appearance of the Global Journal of Engineering Education (GJEE) after a break of several years. Vol.12, No.1 of the Journal can be found on the Internet site of the World Institute for Engineering and Technology Education (WIETE). The issue consists of seven peer-refereed original articles, from authors representing seven countries.

The Global Journal of Engineering Education (GJEE) was created at the then UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE) at Monash University in 1997, and was officially launched at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, by the then Director-General of UNESCO, Dr Federico Mayor, at the April meeting of the then UNESCO International Committee on Engineering Education (ICEE). In its commission of human resource development within engineering through engineering education, the journal provided both a global forum for debate on, and research and development into, issues of importance to engineering education, and a vehicle for the transfer worldwide of information on engineering education.

A few statistics help to illustrate the achievements of the GJEE. In the 11 volumes and 32 issues between 1997 and 2007, the GJEE published well over 400 articles, authored by academics from more than 30 countries worldwide. A special feature of the GJEE was that it published 91 articles in seven annual issues, written entirely in the German language. As such, the GJEE at that time was the world’s only scientific journal publishing articles on engineering education in German. This was achieved mainly through the excellent collaboration with Hochschule Wismar – University of Technology, Business and Design, which at the time was a Partner Institution of the UICEE. Another distinguishing feature was that the GJEE published several Special Editions dedicated to engineering education in a particular country (e.g. Taiwan, Denmark), or various important events carried out by the UICEE, such as congresses, conferences and seminars.

The closure of the UICEE by Monash University in December 2008 resulted in the cessation of the publication of the GJEE and we thought that the life of the journal had been terminated. However, after some time Monash University kindly passed the intellectual property and copyright to the journal’s Editor-in-Chief. Hence, a decision was made to revive the GJEE as an international journal now published under the auspices of the World Institute for Engineering and Technology Education (WIETE), alongside the World Transactions on Engineering & Technology Education (WTE&TE). However, the principal objective of the GJEE is not to compete with the WTE&TE but to provide a primary focus on promoting research and development, specifically in engineering education, as well as to provide the international engineering education community with a forum for discussion and the exchange of information on engineering education and industrial training at the tertiary level.
